Before post boxes were red
Red was chosen for British post boxes in 1874, replacing an earlier green scheme. The Royal Mint’s Post Box history also recalls the boxes painted gold after London 2012 to celebrate gold-medal winners in their home towns.
Those colour changes give the familiar object a longer story. The standard P coin itself remains silver-coloured, with the box and buildings formed in relief.
