2013 London Underground Roundel £2 Circulated Coin
On 10th January 1863 the world's first underground railway opened in London and was an engineering triumph. Today, three million passenger journeys are made every day, serving 275 stations over 408 km of railway. This reverse design by Edwina Ellis features the iconic London Underground logo.
Edwina Ellis, creator of this ‘Roundel’ coin, is a pioneering printmaker and former ‘Art on the Underground’ artist. Her design, featuring the famous logo which first appeared in 1908, carries the edge inscription ‘MIND THE GAP’ and uses lettering in the unique Johnston typeface used for London Underground signage.
